Winter Vegetables!
School Holiday Workshops

Enjoy playing, exploring, as well as making and eating exciting recipes with colourful winter vegetables!

​

Beetroot • Butternut • Parsnips • Turnips • Kumara (sweet potato)

​

These workshops are specifically designed for reluctant, hesitant or picky eaters or those that would like to expand their range of 'accepted' vegetables to eat.​ Anyone who would like a fun activity during the school holidays is welcome – they are for a caregiver and up to three children.

​​

BENEFITS INCLUDE:

  • Helping children to experience new food textures with their hands and their tongue (beetroot).

  • Enjoying spending time with you.

  • Learning a little bit of food science.

  • Practicing language concepts such as describing attributes and differences.

  • Developing social skills like turn taking and good sportsmanship.

  • Implementing cognitive reasoning and memory skills.

  • Building social aptitude.

  • Use of fine motor skills and experience touching a potentially new food just with thumb and forefinger.

  • Messy play with food to build bravery and confidence.

  • Practicing vocabulary skills and understanding of representational objects (e.g. Mr Potato Head with a turnip – understanding the parts that represent eyes, hands, where the shoes and hat go etc).

Part 1: EXPOSE
  • Mystery vegetable

  • Beetroot tattoos

  • Hidden treasures with parsnip ribbons and a 'treasure'

  • Volcanoes and dinosaurs with orange kumara 

  • Mr Potato Head with a turnip!

 

The space will be set up with five activity stations, with one to two pairs each. The first one is for the whole group and will involve six vegetables and guessing – one of them is the mystery vegetable!

 

After the first activity each pair will go to one of the stations, and then move on to the next station when everyone is finished so that everyone gets to experience all five vegetables and the relating activities. ​

Pricing

  • $45 for all activities, per adult and 1 child.

  • Adults must remain with their child or children.

Tuesday July 7

Session: 9.30am to 11.30am approx.

​

Part 2: EXPLORE

Beetroot: Can’t be Beet dip, and Rosy Red fries.

Butternut: Butternut squash risotto with bacon and sage, Balsamic-roasted Butternut squash moons.

Parsnip: Parsnip-carrot mac ’n’ cheese, Parsnip chips with a kick.

Kumara: Kumara toast, and Kumara pancakes

Turnip: Mashed turnips with bacon and chives.

Each vegetable involves two activities, and is a separate workshop for each.

 

Choose one, two, or all vegetable workshops, depending on the age and stage of your child.

Pricing

  • $35 per vegetable, per adult and 1 child, which includes both activities and all ingredients.

  • $10 per each additional child.

  • Maximum 3 children with one adult.

  • Adults must remain with their child or children.

Tuesday July 14

Beetroot: 10am - 11am (15 mins) 

Butternut: 11.15am - 12.15pm (15 mins)

Parsnip: 12.30pm - 1.15pm (15 mins)

Kumara: 1.30 pm -2pm (15 mins) Turnip: 2.15pm - 2.35pm (20 mins)

Part 3: EXPAND

Beetroot: Simply beautiful greens sauté, and Choco-beet cupcakes!

Butternut: Roasted butternut squash salad with glazed pecans, and Butternut squash crumble with vanilla ice cream.

Parsnip: Rainbow ribbon salad, and Pears and parsnips in puff pastry

Kumara: BYO (build your own) baked Kumara, and Kumara 'Beary' bar cookies.

Each vegetable involves making two recipes - a savoury, and a sweet treat!

​Choose one, two, or all, vegetable workshops, depending on the age and stage of your child.

​PLEASE BRING:

  • A plastic container (about ice-cream tub sized) that is sealable to take things home in.

  • An apron for your child (and yourself if you wish).

  • Depending on which workshop you book, there may be other items that you will need to bring.

​

​WORKSHOP TIMES:

The lengths of the workshops are approximate times, as each child operates at a different speed depending on how comfortable they are with other people, how experienced they are at cooking with you, and other variable factors.

​

​PHOTOS:

The workshops will be fun and exciting and having photos will be something positive to reflect on. You are welcome to take photos only of your own children at the event.

We would also love to take photos of the activities, with your permission, for our website and promotional purposes. If you would prefer no photos of your child we can blur their faces.
